Camgian Releases New Low-Power Smart Camera

Product leverages hybrid radar-camera architecture to overcome power and performance limitations of traditional surveillance cameras.

STARKVILLE, MS, – 05 February 2020– Camgian, an award-winning developer of advanced sensor systems and technologies, announces the upcoming release of a low-power, smart imaging capability for its Prowl® Unattended Ground Sensor (UGS) system. Shaped by warfighter feedback, the new low-power, smart camera device, called ProwlCam™, addresses a critical need for augmenting Prowl radar tracks with visual target confirmation. Designed as a “bolt-on” capability to the Prowl radar, the new smart camera device includes computer vision algorithms that deliver robust, high-resolution target imagery to the system’s command and control (C2) software.

ProwlCam co-mounts to the Prowl radar, connecting with just one cable, which simplifies set-up and provides increased geo-registration accuracy as compared to traditional UGS/camera set-up operations. In addition, the camera supports both day and night operations through its combination of high megapixel visible spectrum and long-wave infrared (LWIR) cameras that capture images of Prowl radar targets within the camera’s field of view (FOV) and displays them to the warfighter to enable more informed decisions regarding potential threats and their activities.  In addition, ProwlCam supports long field life by operating at very low power- only “waking-up” when triggered by the Prowl radar. The camera’s initial release integrates advanced object detection algorithms to automatically detect targets within the camera’s fixed FOV, digitally crop the image to the target, and send the image to the user’s C2 device. In future releases planned for later this year, additional object classification features will be included through a new deep learning platform to aid in the recognition of high-value targets,  potential threats and other objects and events of interest. This novel architecture not only supports lower-bandwidth communications for increased range but also offers a significant SWAP-C advantage over traditional pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras. Another key feature of ProwlCam is the option for the user to define an Area of Interest (AOI) within the camera’s FOV and only receive images from within the configured AOI.

“ProwlCAM is a significant increase in the capability that we provide to our most important customers…our Nation’s warfighters,” said Doug “Goz” Gosney, Camgian’s Vice President of Defense Programs. “We already provide the warfighter with real-time radar target detection and tracking in austere environments with Prowl, and now we can provide them with an image of the target as well. We look forward to demonstrating ProwlCAM in the coming months at several operationally relevant scenario and experiment events.”

Camgian Chairman and CEO, Dr. Gary D. Butler said, “The new Prowl smart camera is another great example of Camgian’s ability to deliver innovative new products driven by warfighter feedback and advanced research and development. This new capability will assist our warfighters by increasing the speed and quality of decision-making on today’s dynamic battlefield.”
