Putting the UI in Uniform Design: Paul Sullivan

Found at the intersection of engineering, design, and human psychology, User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) design are an important part of developing any software product. They’re also what I do for a living in my role as a Senior Software Engineer at Camgian.

As a frontend software engineer, my role at Camgian includes conceptualizing, designing, and developing sharp, user-friendly UIs for our web-based products, including Cognition. Being able to combine my passions for design and engineering to create products that I can be proud of is an absolute joy every day.

As someone who grew up the son of a Mississippi State Engineering graduate, much of my childhood in south Mississippi was spent watching and rooting for Mississippi State sports - a passion that I carry to this day. My engineering brain, which loves to categorize and recognize patterns, latched an interest in one particular aspect of those sports from an early age: the logos and uniforms that the teams wore. I became interested in noticing and tracking the little details of football, basketball, and baseball uniforms - particularly those at Mississippi State. This eventually turned into a full-on hobby that scratched my creative itch and prepared me for my future job as a software engineer.

Designing uniforms and designing UIs share many similarities: you want your designs to be clean, aesthetically pleasing and consistent, functional, and distinct. They’re both about the little details - having an eye for consistency and quality is key. Whenever I create a new uniform design or graphic, I want the presentation of it to be eye-catching, sharp, and without any missing or incorrect details. The same goes for UIs - you want them to be easy to use, easy to look at, and to have all the little details considered.

Over the last four years as I’ve been working at Camgian as a software engineer and continuing to create more graphics and designs for my @HailStateUnis social media accounts, these two areas of interest have continued to grow and be mutually beneficial - and I’m excited to for them to continue to do so in the future!
