Capabilities

Camgian Microsystems® supports the innovation of advanced ISR sensor systems and technologies for customers in the defense, intelligence and homeland security communities. It provides engineering and technical capabilities across the entire sensor solution chain including electronic design and development, real-time signal processing, embedded software, networked communications and display systems. Combined with its deep understanding of ultra-low power microelectronics, these capabilities enable Camgian to address critical ISR capability gaps as they relate to the persistent detection, identification and tracking of key ground targets in highly challenging operational environments.

Specifically, Camgian Microsystems® includes the following areas of technical expertise:

Electronic Sensor Design and Development

Using COTS components, Camgian Microsystems® has designed and developed a variety of sensor systems that include: acoustic, thermal, vibration, IR, ultrasonic, optical/video (IR and visual) and ultra-low power RADAR. We also have the ability for in-house design and test of high performance PCBs and ASICs that may be required to support the development of a sensor system.

Signal Processing

Signal processing software and hardware are designed, developed, and tested in house -- enabling us to optimize the processing for a specific sensor system and application. This in turn, helps us maintain minimum size, weight, and power goals. We currently have real-time processing algorithms for signal conditioning, event/target detection, target classification, position localization, and target tracking.

Embedded Software

Embedded software has several purposes. It is used to provide each sensor node with a certain amount of autonomy, it makes it easier to implement real-time algorithms, and it can help reduce the amount of wireless traffic (communications and data) between sensor nodes and monitoring stations.

Wireless Networking and Communications

To date, most of Camgian's sensor systems were designed to be used in remote or inaccessible places. In these environments, wired communications are not very practical. Several communications and networking protocols have been developed to keep the user informed as to sensor status and to allow, in some cases, the remote reprogramming or re-tasking of a sensor. Networking and communications have been implemented via both clear, and encrypted channels using short range, proprietary ISM protocols, longer range Bluetooth and 802.15 protocols, and satellite communications for global linking.

Integrated Systems Development

Leveraging off its expertise in the areas mentioned above, and employing the concept of data fusion, Camgian Microsystems® is developing several, highly integrated, sensor platforms. These platforms combine data from several sensor types to increase the probability of detection various targets or events while decreasing the probability of a target false positive. Also, integration of the various system components can lead to a reduced system size and a reduction in power requirements.

Systems Engineering

Camgian is experienced with all aspects of system engineering and begins development efforts based upon a structured system engineering process. A typical program starts with the concept of operations (CONOPS) being developed with the customer. This is followed by the preparation of a formal requirements document which drives the design, development, system integration, laboratory/field testing and evaluation. This is always carried out with future system spirals in mind, where new technologies can be introduced to improve performance and reduce size, weight, power and cost.
